Acteon understands the importance of investing in fresh talent to address the growing demands of the energy transition within the offshore energy sector. UTEC, a Geo-services brand in Acteon’s Data and Robotics division is addressing the gap in the market through its Student Placement programme. The first cohort was successfully recruited in June 2022, and the placement ran until December.
MEET THE ASPIRING ENGINEERS
Abigail White, Adeyemi Anjorin, Alva Lundmark, and Cristopher Young from Glasgow University joined the programme to apply the theory learned during their Hydrographic Surveying course in a professional workplace.
The first five weeks were a combination of in-house training consisting of EIVA NaviSuite (both data acquisition and processing), VisualSoft, and a week in the workshop at Acteon House, Aberdeenshire, for equipment familiarisation. During this phase, they also completed their offshore survival training at AIS Survivex and spent time training at Veripos.
On completion of the first phase, the students were split into two groups, land survey and offshore, to undertake some training and gain experience in both roles.
Adeyemi Anjorin said, “Working with UTEC on the work placement scheme has broadened and improved my expertise in offshore surveys, remote operations, and data processing. I had the privilege to work with a team of experienced senior surveyors and engineers on diverse projects”.

INSPIRING HANDS-ON EXPERIENCES
The final phase of the programme consisted of onshore work for construction and renewables clients. This included topographical surveys using total stations, GNSS receivers and laser scanners, and underground utility location surveys using both electromagnetic locators (EML) and ground penetrating radar (GPR). The group was also involved with monitoring projects, river sections, and inshore bathymetric surveys. Data processing was undertaken using LSS, AutoCAD, Trimble Business Centre (TBC) and Leica Cyclone software; and digital deliverables and written reports were produced.
A WEALTH OF OPPORTUNITIES
Graduating from University can be daunting. The opportunities in the offshore industry are vast, and it can be tricky to choose a specialism without knowing what is out there. The key benefit of the programme for the students was that it enabled them to train and sample a broad range of projects such as laser scanning, demolition, and utility surveys. They also had the chance to shadow our crewing and project management teams. This hands-on experience was, in their opinion, the most useful part of the scheme.
Ross Leitch, General Manager – Europe & Africa, said, “This first student placement programme concluded at the end of 2022, and we are proud that all four graduates are now permanent employees in the UTEC team. Considering their performances in the last months and the results that they delivered, we have already assigned them to key projects in the renewables and oil and gas sectors.”
Following the success of this initiative, and the demand from students and Universities, UTEC will be running two further programmes during 2023.
