Solution

Real-time riser integrity monitoring for a tension-leg platform

UTEC, Acteon’s Geo-services business line, delivered real-time riser integrity monitoring for a tension-leg platform 5,197 ft deep in one of the world’s most challenging offshore environments: the Gulf of Mexico.

Monitoring critical assets in extreme offshore conditions

The platform was deployed in a region known for strong, full-depth loop currents that could cause fatigue, drill string wear, and compromised conductor integrity. Avoiding downtime and structural damage required real-time insight into riser performance.

Real-time insight to optimise drilling and extend asset life

The platform faced the risk of internal wear from drill string rotation due to increased curvature at ultra-deepwater depths. We delivered a riser monitoring system designed for deepwater environments and high-current conditions. The system tracked bottom current speed and direction, riser inclination, lateral loading, top tension and stroke.

Innovations in action

To address complex integrity risks in ultra-deepwater conditions, we deployed a tailored combination of our proprietary digital monitoring technologies. These tools worked together to deliver real-time insight, enabling proactive decisions that safeguarded operations and extended system life:

  • INTEGRIstick™ – A compact, ROV-deployable dynamic strain sensor that measures riser bending and curvature in real time
  • INTEGRIpod™ – A centralised data hub that captures and communicates integrity data continuously from subsea to topside
  • INTEGRIstrain™ – A long-term sensor solution that tracks stress response and curvature to support fatigue modelling and lifecycle planning

The combined system helped operators define safe operational windows, reduce internal wear and reposition vessels to maintain safe wellhead alignment. Enabled uninterrupted drilling while supporting long-term integrity planning through data-led risk visualisation and predictive intervention.

The result

We delivered a reliable, data-led integrity monitoring system that enabled real-time insight into riser stress and fatigue in ultra-deep water. The operator used this information to optimise drilling parameters, avoid unnecessary downtime and protect critical infrastructure from long-term damage. By combining advanced sensing with predictive insight, we supported safer, smarter, and more cost-efficient operations —aligned with the customer’s long-term goals for asset life extension and integrity assurance.

We are proud to provide advanced integrity monitoring solutions to customers worldwide. Our cutting-edge system adds tangible value to their operations and supports life optimisation efforts. This reinforces our commitment to excellence in integrity monitoring.
