Solution

Virtual management system delivery

UTEC, Acteon’s Geo-services business line, developed iSite, a pioneering virtual management system that was used to define, monitor and control the decommissioning, disconnection and separation of Dunlin Alpha topside modules.

Efficiency at each stage of decommissioning

Fairfield Energy approached Acteon seeking alternatives to conventional methods of workflow management for the multi-year, multi-phase Greater Dunlin Area decommissioning project.

Harnessing reliable data to streamline decommissioning

We developed iSite, a cloud-based platform combining photographic records, HD laser scan data and existing asset models. This solution enables teams to conduct virtual site visits using desktop or virtual reality headsets, allowing seamless monitoring of decommissioning workflows.

Users can access work plans, track tasks and report progress through intrinsically safe mobile devices, ensuring a paperless approach to inspections, reporting and certification. The platform’s intuitive interface and innovative workflow ensure that all users, whether onshore or offshore, interact with synchronised, real-time data, with no specialist knowledge in computer-aided design (CAD), 3D modelling or laser-based point clouds required.

We delivered an encrypted web portal with a central repository for non-structural module separation activities, providing highly visualised work instructions and eliminating the need for costly work packs and paper-based certification. Smart reporting and gated procedures continuously monitor and track progress, providing Fairfield Energy with real-time visibility and graphical outputs reflecting the status of every wall within every module.

Innovations in action

  • iSite digital twin platform – integrated laser scanning, photographic records and existing asset data for remote oversight.
  • Virtual site access – desktop and VR headsets enabled immersive walkthroughs of live decommissioning zones.
  • Paperless inspections and certification – mobile devices supported safe, compliant task completion in hazardous areas.
  • Smart reporting dashboards – visualised progress across modules in real time, enabling fast decision-making.
  • Encrypted web portal – served as a secure, central repository for work plans, approvals and asset data.

The result

Using iSite, we provided Fairfield Energy with the precision, accuracy and control of information crucial to the decommissioning. Through virtual site visits, task tracking and paperless reporting, iSite minimised personnel exposure to site hazards and offered real-time progress visibility. This ensured assets were safely abandoned whilst minimising environmental risk and impact on the bottom line.

Beyond decommissioning, iSite’s capabilities can be applied to maintenance, upgrades, and asset life extension projects across various industries, driving long-term value and cost savings.
