Solution

Mooring installation

We delivered a full-scope mooring installation for the Golden Star floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel offshore Vietnam, managing nine large-diameter piles under tight logistical and technical constraints.

Delivering certainty in a compressed timeline

The tolerance of pile installation was paramount to success. Adding to the technical challenge, we had to complete before cyclone season and the FPSO arrival, during a period of regularly changing logistical limitations due to Covid-19.

Coordinated global delivery under pressure

With nine 72-inch diameter piles to be installed at 115 m water depth, the team coordinated global expertise, equipment and personnel across three continents. Menck, our Marine Foundations business line, led logistics and workshop management from Singapore and oversaw project and asset management from the UK. They delivered the driveability analysis and supplied the hydraulic hammer. A combined crew was deployed to Vietnam from the UK, Singapore and Spain. Centralised project management and cross-trained personnel further streamlined offshore operations, enabling a flexible, resilient installation approach in a highly dynamic environment.

Innovation through integration and adaptability

We achieved the client’s strict 1.5-degree pile installation tolerance despite seabed inclinations of up to 3 degrees. To do this, we integrated a passive heave compensator into the lifting spread to maintain driving accuracy and proprietary Stabframe positioning.

With vessel restrictions in place due to the pandemic, we sourced a local vessel and adapted our equipment - partially dismantling components to reduce deck space. This flexibility minimised offshore footprint, avoided schedule delays and kept operations on track.

The result

We delivered a turnkey FPSO mooring solution that met tight deadlines and precise installation tolerance requirements, despite pandemic-related logistical hurdles. The integrated service model we implemented simplified client engagement, reduced offshore footprint and ensured the project was completed safely, accurately, efficiently and ahead of the region’s cyclone season.
