Shallow water

A fast-tracked geotechnical investigation to support early-stage development of offshore wind farm site N12.1 in Germany’s North Sea.

Rapid response

With just two weeks before operations began, the customer required a vessel to be sourced, vetted and mobilised, along with seabed equipment tested and signed off on an accelerated timeline without compromising safety or quality.

Our solution

01Accelerating project timelines through an efficient and reliable approach

Accelerating project timelines through an efficient and reliable approach

UTEC, Acteon’s Geo-services business line, was contracted by TotalEnergies to deliver a comprehensive geotechnical site investigation in support of the wind farm development. The scope included shallow cone penetration testing (CPT), vibrocore sampling, and onboard laboratory testing across multiple locations.

To meet the compressed schedule, the vessel M/V Vina was sourced, inspected, and approved for operations in less than two weeks, followed by successful mobilisation in just over two days. This included seabed equipment wet testing and a customer inspection.

The survey was carried out using the Roson 100kN seabed CPT system and VKG-6 vibrocores. Lab testing onboard the vessel provided key soil data, such as thermal conductivity and electric resistivity, enabling early-stage design insights while reducing the need for immediate onshore testing. Target penetration depths and sample recoveries were achieved at every test site, allowing TotalEnergies to advance their development plans without delay.

02Innovations in action

Innovations in action

The project demonstrated the value of combining rapid mobilisation with integrated offshore testing capabilities. Our ability to conduct CPTs, sampling, and laboratory tests directly onboard the M/V Vina accelerated data delivery while maintaining high HSE standards. Efficient planning and execution reduced total time offshore, minimising fuel use and lowering the project’s environmental impact.

The result

All operations were completed safely ahead of schedule with no technical downtime, enabling the client to progress to the next phase of development earlier than anticipated. The successful execution strengthened our relationship with TotalEnergies and demonstrated our ability to deliver high-quality, fast-turnaround geotechnical campaigns.

We were pleased with Acteon’s performance on the geotechnical site investigation for our offshore windfarm project in Germany. Their ability to meet tight deadlines and deliver high-quality results with HSE Levels was impressive. The team’s expertise and efficiency ensured the project was completed ahead of schedule, with no technical downtime. We look forward to collaborating with them on future projects.
