UTEC deploying PROD in Mozambique

Project overview

Location:

Mozambique

Water Depth:

up to 2100 m water depth

Solution:

Deepwater geotechnical investigation

UTEC, Acteon’s Geo-services business line, delivered a comprehensive deepwater geotechnical investigation offshore Mozambique using the Portable Remotely Operated Drill (PROD5) seabed drilling system, combining sampling and in situ data to characterise challenging seabed conditions.

Navigating a critical phase

Operating in remote waters with challenging weather conditions, steep seabed slopes, and limited onshore support, we planned and executed this technically complex deepwater investigation safely and efficiently.

Our solution

01Integrated deepwater survey solution

Integrated deepwater survey solution

This offshore campaign required detailed preparation to overcome logistical, metocean, and security challenges in a remote region. A dynamically positioned support vessel was mobilised from Asia and equipped with our PROD subsea drill system, which underwent full commissioning and testing before deployment. Vessel hardening measures and enhanced security protocols were implemented before transit to Mozambique.

To ensure supply continuity and effective coordination, we established an onshore logistics support team. This team managed local supply chains, crew transfers, and permitting, enabling seamless communication between offshore and onshore operations.

The PROD conducted continuous sampling, CPTU, dissipation, and BPTU testing, maximising efficiency by performing multiple in situ tools within a single deployment. Box coring systems were also deployed for sediment sampling and recovery.

Over a 79-day offshore programme, the team achieved less than 10% downtime across the campaign. The investigation acquired over 1900 m of continuous core samples, 1700 m of CPTU data, 19 cyclic BPTU tests, 23 dissipation tests, and 46 box core samples, with complementary offshore laboratory testing providing high-quality geotechnical data. We achieved peak productivity of 120 m drilled in a single day.

02Innovations in action

Innovations in action

  • PROD5 with integrated dual winch Launch and Recovery System (LARS), enabling efficient deployment
  • Multi-tool deployment within a single dive (CPTU, BPTU, dissipation, sampling)
  • Box coring system with a dedicated A-frame and winch

The result

The project was completed on schedule and without incident, demonstrating our competence to deliver large-scale deepwater geotechnical operations in complex offshore environments. Through the integration of subsea tooling, coordinated logistics, and precision data acquisition, we achieved outstanding safety and efficiency. The high-resolution data provided a clear understanding of seabed and near-seabed conditions, supporting subsea foundation design and future offshore development in Mozambique.

This was our 7th project in Mozambique, building on more than a decade of activity in the region. Across Africa, we’ve delivered 12 offshore campaigns in Mozambique, Angola, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Mauritania, Senegal, and Tanzania using PROD technology. Globally, our PROD systems have completed over 90 projects in water depths up to 3,000 m, more than all commercially available seabed drilling systems combined.
