Successful custom CALM buoy disconnection offshore West Africa
Project overview
Location
West Africa
Water depth
384 m
Solution
CALM Buoy riser disconnection
Intermoor, Acteon’s Moorings and Anchors business line, disconnected, plugged and laid down two risers from a catenary anchor leg mooring (CALM) buoy, using bespoke tooling and engineering solutions.
Rethinking riser disconnection for ageing infrastructure
The client needed alternative methods to recover ageing risers in 384 m of water in case reversing the original pull-in approach was not possible.
Tailored engineering for safe, strategic removal
With the original recovery methods posing integrity and safety risks, we developed a customised, lower-impact solution to disconnect and lay down the risers, addressing ageing asset constraints, schedule sensitivity and the need for cost-effective offshore execution.
Working in partnership with 2H, our Engineering experts, we designed, fabricated and deployed custom subsea riser clamps to support the operation. This solution, together with towing socks, provided an alternative removal procedure, enabling precise control as risers were guided to the deck for plug installation before being laid down on the seabed.
This integrated approach not only addressed the technical and environmental complexities but also ensured local language capability and regional delivery from our West Africa base, with support from our fabrication facility in Louisiana, USA.
The result
We successfully completed the project on schedule, under budget and with zero incidents. Through flexible design, innovative tooling and local delivery, the team enabled a safer and more comprehensive life-of-field solution.
