Solution

Deepwater platform removal and reefing

Acteon decommissioned and reefed Anadarko’s Red Hawk Spar - the Gulf of Mexico’s deepest floating platform, delivering a safe, efficient and environmentally responsible outcome.

Breaking new ground in spar removal

This was the first spar to be reefed and the deepest floating platform decommissioned in the Gulf of Mexico, requiring a balance of deepwater engineering, environmental responsibility and timely execution.

A comprehensive approach to deepwater decommissioning and reefing

Intermoor, Acteon’s Moorings and Anchors business line, partnered with Anadarko to decommission the Red Hawk Spar at Garden Banks 876, situated at a depth of 1,585 m.

This collaboration was underpinned by our long-standing relationship with Anadarko and built on successful delivery of previous projects, including the Innovator and Neptune Spar Riser decommissioning campaigns.

We led a tailored decommissioning programme, combining engineering, operational expertise, and logistics management to safely remove the platform.

Services included mooring line disconnection, ballasting and deballasting for topside removal, and tow preparation, providing a comprehensive planning and engineering solution. We implemented clear procedures to coordinate contractors and ensure a safe, efficient transition to the reefing site at Eugene Island.

We also procured and deployed mooring and tow rigging systems, along with water and air pumping equipment. Prior to the decommissioning, we cut and removed riser pull-in tubes and pre-tested the mooring windlass and chainstoppers.

The result

The Red Hawk Spar project set a benchmark in deepwater decommissioning, achieving the first-ever spar reefing and the deepest platform removal in the Gulf of Mexico. Our insight-led approach ensured efficient, compliant and environmentally responsible deballasting, towing and reefing while maximising economic value across the offshore asset lifecycle.
