The integrity illusion: Why reactive maintenance is costing offshore operators more than they think

Most marine infrastructure has a prescribed shelf life. But in practice, it’s often expected to remain in service well beyond it. Across offshore energy, platforms, moorings and subsea cables are operating well past their intended lifespans. Running on borrowed time – why offshore integrity needs a rethink 

The cost of failure is rising. In offshore wind alone, the UK Government's Marine Management Organisation notes that more than 1 GW of generating capacity is set to reach the end of its operational life this decade - and over 10 GW by 2050. Some sites may qualify for life extension or repowering. Others will need to decommission. Either way, the stakes are high. 

Whether in offshore wind or oil and gas, developers and operators can’t afford to depend on reactive maintenance alone. Unplanned outages disrupt production, drive up costs, and pose serious safety risks. In today’s energy landscape, they also threaten supply security.  

Traditional inspection cycles often act to too late. With limited visibility into internal degradation, essential infrastructure is left exposed just when reliability matters most.

Techniques like drone inspection offshore, real-time condition monitoring and digital twin solutions for marine and offshore assets give operators the ability to track deterioration, plan interventions and optimise maintenance strategies over time. 

From reactive to predictive - and proactive 

Today’s offshore operators need clarity, not just data. Platforms that turn raw integrity data into actionable insights are now more important than ever. By embedding wind turbine remote monitoring systems, developers can track real-time performance and intervene early, before small issues escalate. 

Digital twins are reshaping what’s possible in integrity management. By creating a virtual model of a structure that draws on design records, offshore inspection data and real-time sensor inputs, operators gain a holistic view of asset health. These models make it easier to detect early-stage wear, simulate stressors and proactively plan repairs across different asset types.  

As corrosion affects all marine structures, combining corrosion modelling with subsea data capture enables more effective offshore corrosion protection, especially in hard-to-access areas. Similarly, fatigue tracking and structural integrity monitoring can reduce expensive failure and downtime.  

Reactive inspection doesn’t just risk equipment failure, it heightens operational exposure and costs. Traditional inspection methods often require extended personnel time offshore; heavy vessel use and high mobilisation costs. In contrast, remote diagnostics, remotely operated vehicle (ROV)-enabled inspections and condition-based maintenance offer safer, leaner ways to manage asset integrity. 

Digital innovation, including advanced sensing and cloud platforms, is helping operators move from siloed approaches to connected, predictive models. When paired with tailored subsea inspection, intelligent maintenance plans and life extension campaigns, this shift enables smarter scheduling, fewer disruptions and more efficient delivery. 

Asset integrity isn’t just a technical challenge, it’s a long-term commercial one. Tackling it demands both insight and adaptability to safeguard performance and maximise value across the asset lifecycle.
