Session Name: Session IV. O&M Strategies – Developing Visions. Reducing Cost and Risk for Floating Wind Mooring Operations and Maintenance

Session Abstract: As floating wind is a new industry, there is not a current track record of operations and maintenance costs for mooring for floating wind. From recent case studies and from oil and gas experience we can forecast the operations and maintenance costs which can be a sizable amount. This presentation will highlight the operations and maintenance costs of the mooring systems for a floating wind farm and will demonstrate how a holistic operations and maintenance plan throughout the lifecycle of the project can significantly reduce the costs and risks. The holistic program includes robust mooring design, risk assessment, emergency response planning, spares management, instrumentation, digital twins, smart inspections and proactive maintenance.

Session Abstract: Catenary, semi-taut and taut mooring configurations are usually considered for floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs). The paper will focus on a case study where the effects and complexities of the synthetic rope selection, with particular emphasis on nylon for taut mooring configurations will be presented. The paper will also present rope selection’s impact on anchor sizing, component selection, and as-installed costing of FOWT mooring systems. In this presentation, as a case study of taut mooring configurations for a semi-submersible FOWT in a shallow water (150m) harsh environment will be designed considering Polyester and Nylon ropes for technical and commercial evaluations. The impact of the rope selection on component sizing (chain, tensioner, anchor) and on as-installed mooring and anchor costing will be studied and presented. Finally, the additional complexities of modelling the nylon rope response characteristics, technology readiness and qualification needs will be explored.
