AQUATIC INSTALLS OVER 100KM OF UMBILICAL FOR THE ATOLL FIELD
Project overview
Aquatic, the flex-lay and retrieval brand in Acteon’s Energy Services division, supported DeepOcean with the loadout, transpooling, and offshore installation of a 110km umbilical as part of the Atoll gas field in the North Damietta Offshore Concession in the East Nile Delta.
Project Scope
Aquatic was contracted by DeepOcean to provide specialist equipment and personnel to support this technically challenging project. Due to the specialised nature of the umbilical, equipment was required that could operate in synchronisation with the existing vessel lay spread and support the weight of the umbilical without exceeding its stringent gripping force requirements.
The Challenge
Aquatic suggested utilising an AQTT-10-50 50Te 4-Track Dual Tensioner System with a bespoke interface to allow the equipment to be controlled and monitored from the existing vessel carousel control room.
Aquatic’s engineering team, working in conjunction with our clients subcontractors designed and built interface equipment to allow command and telemetry signals to be transmitted between the two systems. The Emergency Stop system of the Aquatic equipment was also linked with the vessel’s safety controller to ensure that the umbilical was protected even during an emergency shutdown.
In addition, a series of experiments using a sample of the umbilical were conducted, and the tensioner’s hydraulic system was adjusted in accordance, to minimise the compressive load that the umbilical could be subjected to between the two units.
A successful Factory Acceptance Test of the system, witnessed by both Aquatic, Subsea 7 and DeepOcean engineers, was conducted at Aquatic’s maintenance and mobilisation facility in Peterhead, Scotland.
The system, along with personnel from Aquatic’s technical, project management and offshore teams was then mobilised onto the Maersk Connector at Port of Blyth to undergo final site integration testing (SIT) prior to the offshore phase of the project.
The result
The system, under the careful supervision of Aquatic’s experienced offshore team, successfully and safely supported DeepOcean in the load out of the 110km long umbilical from a factory in Rosyth before installing it as planned in the East Mediterranean Sea.
Upon completion of the project, Aquatic received positive feedback and a message of appreciation from DeepOcean for the services provided during the campaign.
This project is another example of how Aquatic’s enhanced customer-driven service and innovation culture closely address the needs of our customers, specifically in today’s evolving market.
