Acteon was approached by RenewableUK, the trade association for wind power, wave power, and tidal power industries in the UK, to profile diverse UK talent working in the renewables space. Naturally, we jumped at the chance to get involved and showcase the fascinating roles across Acteon and the people behind them.
Meet Charlotte Port, Lead Mechanical Engineer at Pulse, the lead brand for Acteon’s Asset Integrity and Monitoring segment
I work in the renewable energy industry, heading up a team of diverse and talented engineers who develop the mechanical design of equipment and systems which monitor environmental conditions and loadings on structures. Pulse, a structural monitoring brand in Acteon’s Data and Robotics division, is a leader in providing structural monitoring to the renewables and oil and gas industries.
Each day is different. A typical day for me involves working closely with the various engineering functions and other teams in Pulse on conceiving, developing and reviewing the mechanical design of products whilst liaising with clients and suppliers to ensure the design suits requirements and is manufacturable. I love my job because of the close, inspiring team of people I work with and the variation of work we do. There are so many challenges we overcome, producing exciting and forward-thinking solutions whilst integrating our standard product range. It also gives me the opportunity to get hands-on.
Working in the renewables sector is important to me as we need to find a more sustainable future which has less of an impact on the environment. It is a big world, and everyone can look to make improvements to create a cleaner and greener planet. I try to do this in my personal life by consciously buying products that are kinder to the environment and reusing and recycling what I can.
I started my career in offshore oil and gas, having completed my degree in Product Design at Bournemouth University. In recent years, the shift to renewables is growing and it is a thriving area of our business.
I love being a female engineer in a predominantly male industry, and breaking the stereotype of what an engineer is. Engineering is an exciting and challenging career, with so many paths which allow growth. There are many companies looking for more talented women to join the renewables industry. Acteon’s commitment to the U.S. offshore wind market
Acteon and its strategic business segments and brands have long been involved with offshore energy in the U.S. including wind. MENCK, a marine foundations brand in Acteon’s Engineering, Moorings and Foundations division, provided piling hammers for the Block Island project, offshore Rhode Island in 2016 and TerraSond, a geo-services brand in Acteon’s Data and Robotics division, is providing a geophysical survey to support several of the wind park developments on the U.S. East Coast, such as a cable survey for the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) pilot project. Siemens Gamesa and Acteon have also partnered on the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind pilot project to jointly provide a fully integrated offshore wind turbine operations and maintenance (O&M) package.
Ivan Harnett, Director, US Renewables, says “The U.S. offshore wind market could be at an inflection point as we are starting to see a significant pipeline of projects set to achieve the target of 30GW by 2030. Acteon is actively supporting developers for site investigation surveys through our TerraSond brand, and we are currently closing contracts for installation services in 2023 and 2024. TerraSond will be growing its existing local staff through additional hires as well as developing a presence in additional states because of recent awards, demonstrating our commitment to providing long-term support to U.S. projects.”
